As we all are aware that India is the worlds most populous country and the statistics show that 7.4% are senior citizens of the total population and male senior citizens are marginally lower at 7.1% when compared to females senior citizens at 7.8%. Almost 65% of such citizens are entirely dependent on others for their maintenance and moral support. When it comes to women senior citizens less than 20% are economically independant when compared to men. Satistics even shows that 6.7% men senior citizens are financially supported by their spouses, 85% by their children 2% by their grand children and 6% by others while for women, less than 20% depend on their spouses, about 70% depend on their children, 3% on their grand-children and 6% on their relative and well wishers.
Old age is the law of nature and an inevitable phase of human life. For many older people who don't have a roof over their heads or a place to call their own, a rising trend is being noticed among the urban elderly, who move out of their homes to street, presently MTRDT supported food grains, clothes, soaps, oil, medical, arranging government pension and etc to old aged person in their home only because we dont have building to give safe and dignity shelter.
The Trust is in its endeavour to build old Age home or day care centre to provide safe havens for such ill fated where they can live their lives with dignity and interact with their peers.
